I came across the book by Dr. R. Paul St. Amand (Internist/Endocrinologist) in 2014. It seemed revolutionary, and maybe somewhat personally daunting to start another thing. Upon reading the forward, preface and first chapter, I was convinced that he was the only health care practitioner that had nailed not only the culprit for fibromyalgia, but also the ‘cure’. He devoted forty-nine plus years to the diagnosis, and treatment of fibromyalgia – before it supposedly existed. He found a safe, effective treatment for the condition, one that he even had to use on himself.
The illness entered Dr. St. Amand’s life in 1945, while he was in the armed services. He was hospitalized with the diagnosis of ‘possible rheumatic fever’ because of his red swollen leg joints, and painful muscles. All his test came back normal, and after six weeks, things cleared spontaneously. He writes in his book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia, The Revolutionary Treatment That Can Reverse The Disease. “Cycles of various symptoms appeared sporadically over the ensuing years but with much lighter intensity. I was hit in earnest in my early thirties with many new symptoms but never again with the earlier joint swellings. I had no idea why this developed; I assumed I was not emotionally geared for the stresses, long hours and general tribulations of private medical practice. I tried to pace myself and relax as best I could. That didn’t help, of course, so I was convinced I needed to work harder at it! Only after I stumbled onto and began treating patients with what was later named fibromyalgia did I realize that theirs was a misery I shared. I simply began treating myself. Who else was going to do it?” He writes.
Over the years he explored the many facets of the illness through observation, and compilation from his patient-teachers. They joined in the trial, and error approach that lacked any other scientific credentials. It took many years to grasp the full extent of the illness, and to comprehend just how infuriating, insidious, and debilitating it can be.
Several different drugs have been used to treat fibro. In 1992 Dr. St. Amand’s search led him to try guaifenesin, a widely available medication. “It is well tolerated and has no know side effects. It’s available over the counter without a prescription Some short-acting varieties are well made and effective. Prices vary among these preparations, and despite the fact that the cost has gone up in recent years, the drug is inexpensive when compared with most other medications. ” He notes on page 13.
Dr. St. Amand goes on, “We’ve used guaifenesin as the mainstay of a treatment protocol that actually addresses basic disturbances cause by defective genes, and does not work by merely covering over resulting symptoms. This book is the culminations of more than four decade of research and hands-on examinations. We have treated thousands of patients who have travelled from all over the world seeking relief from this enervating disease. With this treatment, symptoms and pain reverse {can} disappear completely in most patients. Other individuals resume normal lives with minimal residual problems. This is not to say that recovery occurs immediately. Not only is it necessary to find the effective dosage of guaifenesin, but there are also other crucial factors that influence the success rate of our protocol.
In order for the guaifenesin to work, it must have unrestricted access to receptors in the kidneys. These are like little garages where the medication must park and unload its contents before it will be permitted to work. Many ingredients in the products we use every day- pain medications, lipsticks, muscle balms, nutritional and herbal supplements, skin care products, toothpastes, deodorants, sunscreens, and even the sap of plants – contain a chemical known as salicylate. This little devil is capable of hogging all of the parking spaces in the kidney receptors where guaifenesin needs to work. This is nothing new for us. All of our previous medications had the same problem. We stress of patients: the main thing our protocol demands is the avoidance of salicylates.
It must be understood that approximately 30 percent of female fibromyalgic’s have hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, with symptoms that greatly overlap those of fibromyalgia. To be successful, then, treatment must address both conditions simultaneously. If this connection is overlooked and patients fail to make required dietary adjustments, fatigue, cognitive, and intestinal symptoms of hypoglycemia will remain even though fibromyalgia itself will reverse on guaifenesin.
As we will expound in this book, our protocol must be followed very carefully if patients are to achieve the positive results we describe. You can imagine our frustration when we hear, “Oh, I tried this treatment and it doesn’t work.” We’ve heard too often from patients and physicians alike who missed the mandatory step of cleaning out all sources of salicylates. We would like to take up twenty pages of bold print with caps repeating the mantra Don’t use salicylates! Enough said?” Dr. St. Amand concludes.
The use of guaifenesin in treating fibromyalgia is not yet accepted in mainstream medicine. They were unable to publish in medical journals for lack of a successful double-blind study, as Dr. St. Amand explains in his book. That said, many physicians, and other practitioners do use, and support the protocol. Before retiring in March of 2020 at over 90 years old from his practise in California, he and his nurse Claudia Craig Marek spoke at medical meetings, patients-doctor mixed groups, guaifenesin support groups worldwide, occasional television, and radio shows. Basically preaching to anyone who would hear “Guaifenesin works. We plead with you; just follow our instructions!”
The next step is figuring out whether you are fall into the category of fibrogycemic.
