Salicylates and You

If you and your health care practitioner decide to start the *guiafenesin (gwy-FEN-e-sin) protocol, there are some important things to know about salicylates. It is imperative that you avoid any **salicylates topically from now on.

In order for the guiafenesin to work it must have unrestricted access to the kidneys. This is described in Dr. St. Amand’s book What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Fibromyalgia, The Revolutionary Treatment to Reverse the Illness.

Many ingredients in the products we use from cosmetics, pain medications, nutritional and herbal supplements, hair products, sunscreens, and toothpaste all contain salicylates.

The reason to avoid salicylates on guiafenesin is because the salicylate hogs up the parking space in the kidney receptor and won’t allow the guiafenesin to do its job.

So the protocol has ONE RULE: ABSOLUTE AVOIDANCE OF SALICYLATES.

Here comes the hard part. The first step is taking out all your cosmetics, hair products, bath products, sunscreen, toothpaste, and everything else you can think of, and put them on the counter. If the label isn’t there anymore and you would like to keep the product, go online to see the ingredient list. I found it necessary to keep very strict with the products you use and that of your family. Your products are just for you.

Look at the list of ingredients ON PRODUCT LABEL.

Below are listed the ingredients you CANNOT USE:

NO SALICYLATE, SALICYLIC ACID

NO CHEMICALS WITH THE SYLLABLE: SAL – CAMPH – MENTH

NO OILS, GELS, EXTRACTS WITH A PLANT NAME : Except corn, oats, wheat, rice or soy.

NO BALSAM OR BISABOL

SUNSCREENS: NO OCTISALATE, HOMOSALATE, MEXORYL, MERADIMATE

VITAMINS: NO BIOFLAVINOIDS, QUERCERTIN, HESPERIDEN, OR RUTIN, OR ANY HERBAL INGREDIENTS, PLANT OILS OR EXTRACTS.

ANY PRODUCT WITH A FLAVOR LISTED IN THE INGREDIENTS

NO MINT, SPEARMINT, WINTERGREEN, PEPPERMINT

DO NOT DRINK TEA

F. T. C. (Fibromyalgia treatment Center) is Dr. St. Amand website for support. Dr. St. Amand retired in March of 2020, from his practise in California, at over 90 years of age. A huge shout out to him for helping thousands of people with fibromyalgia, and being so dedicated to the research for over 60 years. Here is the link to his remarkable book. https://www.amazon.com/What-Your-Doctor-About-Fibromyalgia/dp/0446694444

There is a tab called Quick Check For Salicylates. Use this when you are shopping for anything that you will need to replace and unfortunately, you may need to replace almost everything. Pin the link TO YOUR MOBILE so you can access it when you are in the store. The ingredient list print can be tiny on some products so use your camera and then zoom.

Yes, you may need to take your budget initially into consideration. I think I may have spent almost 500 dollars to change out to sal-free initially. It’s an investment in you though and you’re worth it. Thankfully, the guiafenesin is affordable on any budget and it is just the initial conversion that is a hard pill to swallow.

Here is the link to purchase guaifenesin /Mucinex over Amazon. Look for it over the counter at your local grocery or drug store. The general dose Dr. St. Amand recommends to start is 300 mg x 2.

I’ve found that doing everything in one grocery shop is the easiest. So products that are sal free and that are easily obtainable each time you need them is important. There are places online to shop for cosmetics such as https://www.cleure.com. The Aveeno product line has moisturizer, body wash, and hair cleansing products. You must get in the habit of reading the label every time you decide to pull a product for topical use off the shelf. Including mascara or shaving cream boys.

All perfumes and colognes have salicylates also. Take time to deal with this new reality. Yes, even your $500 gold nighttime face moisturizer will not be possible. I have cheated and colored my hair every few weeks. I decided to stop doing that. My vanity can deal with the amazing new silvers that have been trying to burst forth on my tender and delicate crown. Not that you have to do that either. I was colouring mine more than every 6 weeks. Therefore blocking more frequently, clearing less or making the protocol potentially less effective.

Finding appropriate deodorant and toothpaste is important. I gave up trying to find a deodorant and pulled my grandmothers old-timer trick with a little baking soda and water on my finger tips -well diluted, works amazing. 10x’s better than the other stuff anyways. In fact when being bed ridden it has worked for 48 hours. Yeah, no deodorant can boast that, and it’s natural too.

So that’s a lot of information at you. Hopefully, you have the book and feel like you can relate. I’m pulling for ya.

Make your recovery, your new discovery❤️
